About Us

California DAR volunteering

The Merced River Chapter, NSDAR, is named for the river which originates in the Yosemite Valley.  Organizing Regent Virginia Chase and nineteen members formed the chapter on October 9, 1990.  It is one of California's seven centennial chapters, all organized during the Society's 100th year, which earned a first place national award for the state.  On April 18, 1997, after thirty years of service to the nation, the Mariposa Chapter, NSDAR, merged with Merced River, NSDAR.  Mariposa means "butterfly" in its native Spanish and somehow it seemed most fitting to have a lovely butterfly alongside a mighty river.
